Review of Icom IC-T81A

If you are interested in using all but one of the bands that a Basic Amateur Licence allows you to operate, this handheld is for you. The IC-T81A covers the 6m, 2m and 70cm bands at 5 watts high, and 1 watt low power, and the 1.2 Ghz band at 1 watt high and 0.1 watt low. The 1.2 Ghz band is advertised as being popular in metro areas such as Toronto, which has 2 repeaters. The out of the box battery (the BP-200) supplies a high transmit power of 4.5 watts. The radio receives from 50-54 mhz, 74-174 mhz, 400-470mhz, 1240-1300mhz. It also receives the Airband, FM broadcasts and some T.V. stations.

Many of the advertised items are handy, like the multi-function 5 way joystick which is used to change bands, change volume settings and to set radio modes. Other things that are gratefully included are: a Die-cast aluminum chassis, JIS grade 4 water resistance, backlit display with timer, 124 memory channels, 10 scan channels, 1 call channel for each band and CTCSS encode and decode(which includes Pocket Beep).

Other extras are 7 digit alphanumeric display, 9 DTMF memories, a battery voltage indicator(in volts), a built in guide function and a CTCSS tone scan which detects the tone that is being transmited. Interesting options are: handheld to handheld cloning capabilty which allows you to transfer memory channels easily between two handhelds, and a optional 3 AA battery pack.
